How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 using a grey wire. The ECU uses this information to regulate boost and fuel. It also sends a signal to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the position of the camshaft, so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of an issue with the chain or a jumpy chain link in the upper timing chain. The code won't appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Audi.jpgTesting can be a bit difficult since there are two connector pins and they serve different purposes but the best way to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is functional, it should read about 1000 ohms. Examine for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a massive drop in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors weren't firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was unclean. I put a piece of tissue over each hole in the injector and when I turn the engine on without sparks, the ones with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one remains closed. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I found 0ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged and it runs perfectly when it is plugged in however it has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even if it is not plugged in, shows a temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.

I'm not sure what to do. I believe that I've ruled everything else out. However, i'm afraid that i might have missed something. Let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate the spare in a salvage shop or parts store. It is easy to test them - simply put your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing upwards). They should be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines must know the position and speed the crankshaft to determine timing of fuel injectors, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If either of these go badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner which can lead to engine shutdown.

Some of the symptoms of a failed G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter for the gearbox, gears shifting quicker than normal and/or a misfire when you're in gear. It is likely that the sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you encounter any of these symptoms. They're inexpensive and easy to locate, especially when they're a Bosch unit like ours. Alternatively, the GM version of this unit is also a good option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a myriad of issues in your car. It's an essential component of your audi spare key's transmission, because it communicates to the ECU about how fast or slow the vehicle's crankshaft is turning. This sensor could cause the transmission to fail and other car components to be affected.

The G5 engine sensor is located near the edge of the transmission, over the flywheel ring. It sends signals via a gray wire to the ECU pin T55/49.
